Despite weeks of rain in the UK we are hopeful that the warmer summer weather is just around the corner. So to help you prep for that, or to get your grooming routine summer holiday ready we have created this quick guide that includes seven essential summer grooming tips for men to ensure that your skin and hair survive summer and come out the other side in their best condition yet…
In the summer months, the rising temperatures can result in more sweat which can then lead to clogged pores and breakouts. To help combat this we recommend washing your face twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening before you go to bed. Washing your face first thing in the morning helps to remove any excess oil or bacteria that may have accumulated on your face overnight. Pillows in particular can be a breeding ground for bacteria. In a recent study by Amerisleep it was found that an unwashed pillowcase could hold three million bacteria (17,000 times more than the average toilet seat!). Washing your face at night allows you to remove any sweat, dirt or product that has built up throughout the day. Washing your face with a gentle soap such as our Face Wash twice a day should be fine for most skin types but consult a professional if you suffer from extreme dryness or sensitive skin to ensure that cleansing twice a day won’t cause further damage.
Applying SPF may sound like a no-brainer but surprisingly many Brits forgo applying sunscreen even in the summer months which could be causing long-term damage to the health of your skin. A recent research study by Medino noted that 77% of UK residents over 18 don't wear sunscreen to protect themselves from the UK sun. There are so many benefits to wearing sunscreen, it reduces your risk of developing skin cancer, prevents sunburn and can combat fine lines and wrinkles. We recommend wearing a factor 30 plus everday on your face for moderate protection.
It is estimated that 64% of your skin is made up of water so it is important not to allow yourself to get dehydrated, particularly during the warmer summer months. The UK government advises that you drink at least 6 - 8 glasses of water daily to stay hydrated. Keeping yourself hydrated has a number of benefits for the skin, one major one is that it helps to reduce wrinkles by maintaining the elasticity of your skin.
Whether you are an exfoliation newbie or a seasoned veteran we recommend that during the summer months you exfoliate your face a couple of times a week. This will help to remove dead skin cells and product residue as this can block pores and cause breakouts. It is best to do this as part of your evening skincare to remove any build up that's accumulated throughout the day. Be sure to use an exfoliator with gentle ingredients such as our Face Scrub so that it doesn’t strip your skin of its natural oils.
If you are sporting a beard this summer then this tip is for you. You may have noticed that the skin underneath your beard can be prone to dryness, flakiness and itching. This can be even more common during summer if your skin is lacking moisture. One way to soothe the skin underneath your beard is by applying a Beard Moisturiser to help hydrate this delicate skin without making your beard hair look greasy.
If you’ve been thinking of investing in a serum then summer is the perfect time to take the leap and introduce one into your daily skincare routine. Serums help to target more specific skin concerns as they penetrate the deeper layers of your skin. Our 24k Gold Serum contains Rosehip and Argan Oil that detox the skin and provide anti-ageing powers. At the same time, the Castor oil helps to repair skin that has been damaged.
You might find during summer that you have to wash your hair more often as it’s looking more greasy due to the hot and humid climate. While there is nothing wrong with washing your hair more regularly you may find that if you are using a product that contains harsh ingredients it is stripping your hair of its natural oils and leaving your scalp and hair dry. Therefore we recommend using a gentle shampoo such as our soap bar Hair Shampoo which contains saponified Olive oil, coconut oil and French green clay. These key ingredients will help your hair and scalp stay hydrated, and healthy and cleanse hair of excess oils without stripping any of the hair's natural oils.
